I do have previous B2B sales experience and this would be for a reputable dealer here in town. Is it something I can do and continue going to school? Is there room for a no pressure salesman at a dealership. Will it all just drive me crazy? I am 35 years old and have a background in electronics (real electronics) sales and service. I give you a picture of my dad’s race truck circa 1994.

That doesn’t exist

Simple answer, based on what I’ve heard from car salesmen friends; no.

More complex answer; Sure. It can work, but I think the sort of circumstance you have envisioned is very rare.

Most people start out at a dealer doing sales on the phone, which is not fun. Also, you generally don’t make great money unless you’re selling a lot or working for a very reputable high end dealer. And “no pressure salesman” is a bit of an oxymoron. Even if you aren’t putting pressure on customers, there will be a lot of pressure on you to hit quotas, whether by management or your own motives (more money, competitiveness, etc).

Only because you’ll have a high-pressure manager who will not understand your tact, no.

As a former car salesman.

Do you have a family? Do you mind working every weekend and holiday (besides thanksgiving/christmas day)?

I thought I’d be able to do it. But then I learned some of the games the dealer I worked at and became disgusted. I don’t think I’d fit in because im not pushy or trying to rip anyone off. I’ll stay in service.

I hate the bait and switch. Letting customers drive a car for a weekend only to come in and be sold on a different one or end up with mich higher payments. Harassing phone calls... it goes on and on

Are you planning for it to become a career, or just something to do for a couple of years? Since you are 35, it wouldn’t be advisable to do the latter if you don’t have a previous career to go back to.

And “no pressure salesman” is an oxymoron. Without pressure people just aren’t much tempted to make such big commitment/expenses in person, so that without pressuring you won’t earn as much.
